The deadline to place a franchise tag on an NFL player this offseason is March 9, making that an important deadline in negotiations.
If the Denver Broncos do not reach an agreement on a multi-year extension with Justin Simmons by Tuesday, the safety will likely receive a one-year franchise tag. Denver would still be allowed to continue negotiating with Simmons after placing a tag on him.
Both sides hope to reach an agreement before the tag deadline.
“Justin is one of our core guys,” Broncos general manager George Paton said Thursday. “Our goal since I got here is to sign him to a long-term deal. We have had discussions with his agent. I don’t know if we’ll get a deal done or not, but that’s our goal. He’s the type of guy we want to extend.”
Simmons said during a recent interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he hopes to stay in Denver.
“It seems like Denver wants me back and I want to be there,” he said.
