Broncos cut TE Nick Vannett

March 23, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

The Denver Broncos have released tight end Nick Vannett, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Vannett signed a two-year, $5.7 million contract with the Broncos last year but only lasted one season in Denver.

Vannett was scheduled to have a salary cap hit of $3,553,125 this season, according to Spotrac.com. His prorated signing bonus of $875,000 will still count against the cap as “dead money,” but Vannett’s release will give the Broncos a net cap savings of $2,678,125 in 2021.

Vannett was signed to be a blocking tight end but he was underwhelming as a blocker and rarely used as a receiver. Last year, the 28-year-old tight end only caught 14 passes for 95 yards and one score.

Denver has two promising tight ends in Noah Fant and Albert Okwuegbunam, but they are used primarily as receivers. The Broncos might now look to bring in a new blocking tight end.

Even before cutting Vannett, Denver had almost $25 million in estimated salary cap space. The team now has around $27.6 million.
