The Denver Broncos have released nose tackle Kyle Peko, the team announced Thursday. Kyle (6-1, 305 pounds), the younger cousin of NFL veteran Domata Peko, totaled 12 tackles in 13 games with the Broncos over four seasons.
Peko opted out of the 2020 season with COVID-19 concerns and he was placed on the “higher risk” list. His wife, Giuliana, battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2019. She is now cancer-free.
As a higher-risk opt-out, Peko earned $350,000 in 2020 and his $990,000 salary was pushed to 2021. After releasing the 27-year-old defensive lineman, the Broncos will save almost $1 million worth of salary cap space.
Cutting Peko was the sixth move new general manager George Paton has made this offseason. He previously waived wide receiver Fred Brown, safety Alijah Holder, tight end Jordan Leggett, defensive end Joel Heath and tackle Darrin Paulo and released veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye.
Denver top defensive linemen under contract for 2021 are Jurrell Casey, Dre’Mont Jones, Mike Purcell and DeShawn Williams. Shelby Harris is scheduled to become a free agent in March.
