After trading away their first- and second-round picks in 2023 to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade, the Denver Broncos have a depleted list of picks for next spring.
Denver did manage to add an extra third rounder from the Indianapolis Colts in a trade down during the 2022 draft over the weekend.
“We wanted to pick up picks for next year,” Broncos general manager George Paton said Saturday. “I didn’t know how it would go. I’m happy we got a third. Would’ve liked to have maybe gotten a few more but it just didn’t work out.
“We were working the phones and once you get past the fourth round, it’s hard to get much value. We’re happy with the third — we have five [picks] next year. We’ll have a lot more than that, I guarantee it by the time the draft comes around.”
Here’s a look at the team’s current picks for next spring:
Round 3: own pick
Round 3: via Colts (2022 draft trade)
Round 4: own pick
Round 5: own pick
Round 7: via Vikings (Stephen Weatherly trade)
The team’s sixth-round pick was sent to the Detroit Lions last year as part of the Trinity Benson trade and the Broncos’ seventh-round pick was shipped to the San Francisco 49ers as part of the Jonas Griffith trade last summer.
As Paton noted, the team will make many more trades between now and 2023 so fans can expect the team’s pick total to increase before next April.
