Broncos Could Steal Top Tackle From Chiefs, Ravens

September 22, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Cameron Fleming

Two-time Super Bowl champion Cameron Fleming could return to the NFL in the coming days. A fourth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Stanford product spent his career as a spot starter and high-level backup for the New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos. While he’s best known for his time with New England, Fleming spent the past three seasons in Denver and could be coming back for more.

According to Mike Klis of 9 News, the Broncos brought in Cameron Fleming for a workout following the injury to Mike McGlinchey. As of this posting, the Broncos have yet to sign him, and they might not get the opportunity. While Denver is the first team to publicly show interest, tackle-needy contenders like the Baltimore Ravens or Kansas City Chiefs could make a play for his services.

The Broncos held tryouts for old friend OT Cameron Fleming today and also OL Braeden Daniels, a 4th-rd draft pick of Washington Commanders last year. Daniels was released two days ago from the Texans’ practice squad.

Chiefs, Ravens Could Steal Cameron Fleming From Broncos

The Baltimore Ravens lost several key players in free agency, including three starters on the offensive line. Lacking the financial resources to bring in proven veterans, Baltimore believed in their ability to draft and develop adequate replacements. So far, that experiment is off to a bad start. Ronnie Stanley remains his reliable self (some questionable penalties notwithstanding) but Patrick Mekari and second-round pick Roger Rosengarten aren’t holding up their end of the bargain. With the team sitting at 0-2, Baltimore could turn to a proven veteran in free agent Cameron Fleming.

Roger Rosengarten could have a bright future in the NFL, but very few players can make a Day 1 impact at offensive tackle. Baltimore needs a player who can step up and start right away, and Cameron Fleming might be the best option available. While he won’t set the world on fire, the offensive tackle can provide adequate protection for an elusive player like Lamar Jackson. As an added bonus, Fleming’s experience with postseason play could be an asset for a Ravens team looking to finally get over the hump and win their first Lombardi Trophy since the Joe Flacco days.

Protecting Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs have arguably the best interior offensive line in football, but their tackle situation is a major liability. Second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia earned the Week 1 starting job, but he couldn’t make the most of that opportunity. Head coach Andy Reid recently said that the rookie will split snaps with Wanya Morris, which isn’t good news for anybody. Like Rosengarten, Saumataia is talented enough to have a long, successful career in the NFL. However, this team wants to win a Super Bowl now, and a veteran like Cameron Fleming could help accomplish that goal.

Cameron Fleming has experience at both tackle positions, making him an ideal fit for this roster. While left tackle is the bigger need, eyes should also be on Jawaan Taylor. The big-money addition had a rough 2023 and has yet to play like he did with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s too expensive to cut, but Kansas City could bench him if he fails to improve in the back half of the year.
