Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett allows extended plays at practice: ‘It benefits everybody’

June 11, 2022 by Broncos Wire

What’s good for one is good for all.

In other words, a four-way intersection with multiple gas stations turns into the gas station intersection. People are more likely to get gas from one of the gas stations where multiple options are available. As opposed to a one-off station potentially out of the way. What’s good for one is good for all. Where am I going with this? The same can be said for the Denver Broncos‘ practices under newly-hired coach Nathaniel Hackett. The first-time coach is allowing extended plays at practice because “it benefits everybody.”

Some coaches stop plays when defensive linemen get near the QB at practice, simulating what would likely be a sack in a real game. The Hackett-led Broncos, meanwhile, are letting plays be extended at practice. Even if it appeared the QB might have been sacked in a real game.

The benefit is twofold — it allows mobile QB Russell Wilson to operate how he normally would in a game and it gives the Broncos’ defense extra reps against mobile QBs.

Speaking to the media last week, Hackett said, “One thing that we want to do is we always want guys to be ready to extend plays. He’s got so much tape in his past that sometimes plays don’t work out the way we want them to as a coach and he makes you look good by running around. Even though I think that there’s a potential for a sack in that moment, you never know with him.

“We want to try to extend it and we want to push those DBs back there to have to continually cover because there’s a lot of guys in our little division here that can run around do some good things. It benefits everybody, but we want to extend that play and understand how to still find a play.”

Elsewhere, the Broncos’ presumed starting tight end for next season, Albert Okwuegbunam, is attending George Kittle‘s tight end university this summer. The former’s expected to compete with third-round rookie tight end Greg Dulcich to be atop the depth chart in 2022.
