With training camp set to begin today, here’s a quick summary of the Denver Broncos’ major offseason moves.
What’s new
The Broncos traded a late-round pick to the Panthers in exchange for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and the team selected running back Javonte Williams in the second round of the NFL draft. Additionally, Denver will welcome back wide receiver Courtland Sutton this fall after he missed last season with a knee injury. The Broncos also improved their defensive outlook by signing Kyle Fuller and Ronald Darby in free agency and they added a third cornerback — Patrick Surtain II — with their first-round draft pick.
Camp battles
Bridgewater will compete with Drew Lock for the starting quarterback job during training camp and preseason. Lock seems to be the early favorite given his experience in Denver’s offense, but it will be a wide open competition. Williams will also compete with Melvin Gordon for RB1 duties, but that competition won’t be as intriguing because Gordon and Williams are expected to share touches fairly evenly early in the season regardless of who’s No. 1 on the depth chart. Gordon is the early favorite to “start” in Week 1, but Williams will be heavily involved and his role might increase by mid-season. On defense, Surtain’s competition for playing time in a crowded secondary will include Bryce Callahan and Michael Ojemudia.
