The Denver Broncos’ depth chart for Week 1 is out and Bobby Massie is listed as the starting right tackle. Competition over.
Massie competed with Calvin Anderson and Cam Fleming for the starting job this summer after the Broncos parted ways with Ja’Wuan James. He’s now set to start against the New York Giants with Anderson serving as the backup.
“Bobby, he’s a great tackle,” outside linebacker Von Miller said on Aug. 25. “I’ve been going against Bobby my whole entire career since he was with the Cardinals, and then with the Bears I went against him a couple of games.
“He went against Khalil Mack weekly in Chicago and so I’ve got a great sparring partner out here at practice. It’s great to have tackles like that, it’s great to go against a No. 1 tackle that you’ll see in a game and go out there and get game-like reps every single day. I know if I’m doing good out here, I can do good in a game. It’s great to have a sparring partner like Bobby.”
Going up against pass rushers like Mack and Miller is great for Massie, too. This week, he’ll go up against New York edge defenders Oshane Ximines and Lorenzo Carter. In his final 18 games with the Bears, Massie was penalized twice and allowed three sacks. He’ll now look to protect Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was sacked 31 times last season.
