Courtland Sutton is skipping the Denver Broncos’ (voluntary) offseason workout program as he seeks a new contract, which the team seems unlikely to give him.
The Broncos are already in a salary cap pinch after eating $53 million when they released quarterback Russell Wilson earlier this offseason. Denver did pick up Sutton’s $2 million guarantee in March, but the team seems unlikely to give him a raise in 2024.
Though his base salaries are set to be $13 million and $13.5 million over the next two years, Sutton’s cap hits will be north of $17 million in 2024 and 2025. Despite coming off a 10-touchdown season, Sutton seems unlikely to get an even larger portion of the team’s salary cap.
So, what happens next?
Sutton will be fined if he skips mandatory minicamp (June 11-13), but that’s still two months away. If the Broncos do not plan to give the wide receiver a raise, they might consider trading him, perhaps during the NFL draft (April 25-27). Here’s a quick list of eight teams who might make sense in a hypothetical trade.
