2 Broncos get bonuses after NFL's switch to 17 games

April 2, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

The NFL’s decision to add an extra game to the regular season will prove to be financially beneficial for Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller and right tackle Ja’Wuan James.

The Broncos’ extra game will be against the Detroit Lions, who finished in the same place (fourth) in the NFC North as Denver finished in the AFC West last season. That extra game will result in extra game checks for Miller and James, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Because their contracts originated before 2/26/20 CBA “agreement” and were not on rookie deals, Von Miller/Ja’Wuan James* to get an extra game check from added 17th game.
That’s an extra $1,029,412 for Von ($19.03M total).
An extra $579,412 for James* ($10.58M total). #9sports

Klis noted in a followup tweet that it’s not certain if James’ opting out of the 2020 season will impact his extra game bonus. Assuming that won’t affect it, James will be set to earn an extra $579,412. Miller will earn more than $1 million.

Among players, the biggest (financial) winner from a 17-game season in 2021 will be Lions quarterback Jared Goff. By playing an extra game against the Broncos, Goff will earn an additional $1,508,823, more than any other player in the league.
