November 28, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Calgary Flames made some news on the last Friday in November. News emerged that the team had extended three key members of the front office team. This includes general manager Craig Conroy, president of hockey operations Don Maloney, senior vice-president of hockey operations/assistant general manager Dave Nonis, and vice-president of hockey operations/assistant general manager Brad Pascal.

Flames brass said the respective two-year extensions were signed before the season. These deals will run through the 2027-28 campaign.

Calgary Flames Give Craig Conroy and Others Contract Extension

Conroy has been the Flames’ general manager since 2023, when Brad Treliving departed for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ GM job. The Potsdam, New York native served as Treliving’s assistant GM from 2014 until 2023.

Conroy had a lengthy playing career of 16 seasons, including two stints with the Flames. He registered 97 goals and 2011 assists for 308 points. His best season with the club in 2001-02, when he notched career highs in goals (27), assists (48), and points (75).

Conroy also played for the St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings, and Montreal Canadiens. He ended his career with 182 goals and 360 assists for 542 points.

What It Means

Calgary hasn’t made the Stanley Cup Playoffs since the 2022 campaign. However, ownership is looking for some continuity. They also extended head coach Ryan Huska, who inked a two-year deal that keeps him behind the bench until 2028.

The Flames also have a new arena on the horizon with the opening of Scotia Place in 2027. Calgary will likely load to give the fans a team that can compete once the team is ready to drop the puck at its new digs.

However, the sledding has been tough for the Flames this season. Calgary is at the bottom of the Pacific Division with 19 points entering Friday’s play. Despite this, there are some key building blocks in place for the team to finally compete in a couple of seasons.
