Greg Cronin Let Go After Two Seasons Behind the Bench

The Anaheim Ducks announced Saturday morning that head coach Greg Cronin has been relieved of his duties. The decision comes after a 35–37–10 season in which the Ducks missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year. Greg Cronin was hired in June 2023 to replace Dallas Eakins, bringing a reputation for player development from his time with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. While there were flashes of growth, particularly from younger players like Leo Carlsson and Jackson LaCombe, the on-ice results didn’t meet the club’s expectations. Anaheim finished near the bottom in several key categories, including special teams and shots against per game—metrics that often reflect a coach’s systems and structure. Cronin finished with a 62–87–15 record across his two seasons.

Ducks Searching for “New Voice” to Guide Rebuild

In a statement, general manager Pat Verbeek thanked Greg Cronin for his contributions to the team and acknowledged his focus on developing the club’s young core. However, Verbeek also made it clear the team is looking for a “new voice” to help push the rebuild forward. “I believe we need a different style and leadership to maximize the potential of our players,” said Verbeek. The Ducks earned 21 more points this season compared to last. However, Lukas Dostal can claim most of the credit for that progress. The team did not show a significant shift in overall play.

What’s Next for Anaheim After Parting Ways With Greg Cronin?

The search for Cronin’s replacement is already underway. Anaheim will likely look at both veteran NHL coaches and promising candidates from other leagues. Fans have been calling for David Carle, but he seems content at Denver University. With cap space to spend and a stockpile of prospects, the Ducks are in a position to accelerate their rebuild. That is, if they can find the right bench boss. Greg Cronin’s firing signals that the Ducks aren’t content with moral victories and developmental milestones alone. The next hire will be judged on wins and playoff contention. One thing is clear: the new coach will inherit much higher expectations.
